Ethiopian Community Services

Building Stronger Communities

For decades, Ethiopians sought educational opportunities abroad, leading to migration to the United States and Western European countries from the 1970s onwards. While some returned to Ethiopia after completing their studies, the largest wave of Ethiopian immigration occurred in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, driven by political turmoil and civil war.

Ethiopian Community Services

Amid this migration, approximately 25,000 Ethiopians found a new home in Santa Clara County.

The existing Ethiopian community attracted more immigrants, including Diversity Visa Lottery recipients, drawn by employment prospects, favorable weather, and cultural diversity. In response to the needs of these individuals, Ethiopian Community Services, Inc. (ECS) was established on April 5, 1991, as a not-for-profit organization.
